Eden Court's night of nostalgia
A NIGHT to remember for lovers of the sounds of the sixties is promised at the Highlands’ premier entertainment venue this weekend.
The Animals and Steve Cropper share a Sunday night double bill that pairs contrasting guitar-led hit makers from both sides of the Atlantic in a nostalgic trip down memory lane.
Original ‘60s Animals John Steel and Mickey Gallagher will open the Eden Court gig by belting out a selection of their best-loved hits. The band has continued in various incarnations since forming in Newcastle in 1962 with a bitter latter-day battle over rights to the original name ultimately won by drummer John Steel.
The Animals — known for hits House of the Rising Sun, Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood and We Gotta Get Out of this Place — formed part of what was dubbed the British invasion of America in the 1960s.
An American who made an impression this side of the pond tops the bill on Sunday. Stax legend Steve Cropper will be performing all the worldwide smash hits he wrote and performed with Booker T and The MGs, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett and The Blues Brothers.
Cropper didn’t look back after strumming a Gibson guitar for the first time at the age of ten. Co-writer of classics like Knock on Wood, In the Midnight Hour and (Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay with Otis Redding, he has been named “Greatest Living Guitar Player” in one influential poll and can list admirers including Lennon, McCartney and Keith Richards.
