Despicable Me

By SPP Reporter

DESPICABLE Me is an enjoyable and, at times, very touching comedy told through fantastic animation.

Gru (Steve Carell) is an ageing, and ailing supervillain who we join as he plans the greatest heist in history – he is going to steal the moon, an achievement that will single-handedly showcase his mean prowess, fend-off his young nemesis Vector (Jason Segal) and just maybe prove to his mum (Julie Andrews) that he isn’t the failure that she has labelled him.

His assistant Dr Nefario (Russell Brand), is on hand to provide villainous gadgetry and drive the plot along whilst an army of tiny, excitable, yellow minions provide a workforce and many of the film’s greater laughs.

Gru’s plan is working nicely until he adopts three little orphan girls who start to melt his icy heart and make him question which path in life will bring him true happiness – Superbad or Superdad? Considering that this is a tale of villainy and evil-doers, there is very little darkness in the film.

Whilst I enjoyed watching the story twist and turn over the 90 minutes, Despicable Me lacked the depth of character that I have come to expect from watching this type of movie. Definitely an asset to your family movie collection, the great cast and decent pace make this a safe bet.
