CHILDREN could have been injured as a result of deliberate damage to a roundabout in an Alness playpark, according to police.

Large sections of the metal framework on the roundabout in Westford were removed overnight on Monday into Tuesday, leaving several exposed sharp edges.

A Northern Constabulary statement said: "The result is the roundabout was unsafe to be left where it was and it has had to be removed by the council. The play park is well used by local children, injuries could have resulted had the damage not been discovered so quickly. The cost of replacing the roundabout is estimated to be several hundred pounds."

Anyone who is able to give any information about how the damage was caused can contact police either at Alness Police Station on 01349 882222 or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111
