Ross SWIs ready for a busy session
MEMBERS of a Ross-shire branch of the Scottish Women’s Institutes have launched a new session following a busy and highly varied summer.
Contin SWI enjoyed a special group outing and heard about the lifeline work of a Highland organisation amongst a plethora of other activities over the summer.
Despite heavy rain on the day, an outing to Blair Castle was "full of fun and enjoyed by all", according to Contin SWI secretary, Maggie Watson.
A tea and cake stall at the Strathconon Games again proved a hit with visitors to the popular annual event and helped to boost the coffers of a number of local charities.
At the group’s most recent meeting, a donation was handed over by treasurer Angela Ross to Sheila Ross and Graeme Watson of Mikeysline and the Hive Project.
Mikeysline was founded in late 2015 after a number of suicides in the Highland area. It runs two services, the text line, as well as the Hive in Inverness City Centre. It aims to get people talking about mental health problems.
Maggie Watson added: "We have an lively year ahead of us with various activities, speakers and outings. If you would like to join us please come along to our next meeting on October 18 at 7.15pm in the Strathpeffer Community Centre. Our speaker that night is from Cromarty Lighthouse and you will be made most welcome. There is a small fee of £2 and you will be sure to enjoy our lovely teas and you might even win a raffle prize!"
The Ferintosh branch of the SWI met in Cafe Biagiotti in Beauly on October 3.
Members enjoyed a sugar craft demonstration which lifted the lid on how to make floral decorations using specialist sugar icing. Following the demonstration, members enjoyed coffee, tea and home baked petit fours at Cafe Biagiotti.
The next meeting is on Wednesday, November 7 at 7.30pm in Ferintosh Hall. The speaker on the night, Helen Morrison, will talk about ceramics.
Rosemarkie’s SWI met on October 4.
The president, Ann McGhee, welcomed a good attendance with special welcome to new members.
The guest for the evening was Marilla Tyler from the Highland Hospice who gave an interesting talk about Helping Hands in the Highlands and how the ladies could go about becoming a member of the Befriending Team as the hospice team are always looking for volunteers.
The ladies were reminded that the Gordon Memorial Hall Craft Fair will take place on Saturday, November 10.
The monthly competitions this month were; an item beginning with the letter B, pretty earrings and a decorated matchbox.
The next meeting will take place on Thursday the 1st November and our guest will be Jane Scott (Woolly Birdie) and she will be arm-knitting with us.
The competitions for November are: ‘the letter C’, a charity knitted item and a photo with a caption.
Contributions from SWI branches in Ross-shire are welcome and can be emailed to newsdesk@spp-group.com. If sending photographs, please include captions.
