Diamond Day for Buckie couple

By SPP Reporter

?A BUCKIE couple who met at a Town House dance in the late 1940s celebrated sixty years of wedded bliss today.

Mary and Edward Geddes were presented with a Diamond Anniversary card from the Queen by John Fowlie, former vice lord lieutenant of Banffshire and family friend.Local councillor Anne McKay also visited the couple at their St Peter’s Terrace home to mark the milestone.Mr and Mrs Geddes, who have four children, five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren, had earlier celebrated the event with family and friends. The couple were both brought up in Buckie, but first crossed paths at the Saturday night dance, held at the Town House in 1949.They married on April 25, 1951 at the South Church, where they still regularly attend worship, and went on to set up home in the town.Mrs Geddes (81), who had previously worked as a shop assistant at J&T Campbells, said their marriage was a happy one, based on the ethos of sharing and helping each other.Mr Geddes (87) spent his working life at sea, skippering ‘Elm Grove’ in waters off Scotland from Shetland to the north of England."I was away every Monday morning and home by Friday, so I spent every weekend at home with the family," he said.Overwhelmed by the amount of cards, flowers and gifts they have been given, the couple added that they were "honoured" to have received greetings from the Queen.
