COFFEE, chat and a screening of the latest big match are on offer at Elgin City Football Club as part of a new community event for older people.

Each Wednesday at Borough Briggs, a growing number of Moray folk aged 50 and over have been attending a coffee morning laid on by the club.

Whether it's diehard City fans who remember the Black and Whites' glory days of the sixties, or just people who just enjoy a blether, a cuppa and a piece, more and more are meeting up each week at the stadium's social club.

Elgin City's office administrator and supporter liaison officer, Aimee Walker, explained how the idea of the project – called Staying On Side – came about.

"It was set up to further the club's involvement in the local community and engage with supporters who might not be able to attend games," she said.

"It's a chance to meet friends with the same interests and share their memories of following Elgin City. Those who have attended so far have said it is very well set up and welcoming."

Long-standing City supporters like Ewen Menzies, Gordon Riddoch and Elgin couple Bob and Audrey Milton have already become regulars.

Former committee member, Stewart Crockett attended one of the events and later posted on Twitter: "Spent a great wee while at Elgin City Social Club this morning at the Coffee and Cake Club, met a few people that I hadn't seen for ages and had a good blether. Great to see the chairman, some directors and coaches also in attendance. This is a must-do date for all over 50s."

Meeting their guests at Borough Briggs are current club chairman Graham Tatters and fellow director Cecil Jack, as well as City striker Shane Sutherland, defender Darryl McHardy and goalkeeper Thomas McHale. Footage of Elgin's latest League 2 matches, filmed each week by club video analyst Louise Shaw, is shown on the big screen at the coffee mornings.

"As it is just established we will be looking to invite former players to come along and share their stories," Aimee added.

Staying On Side is held each Wednesday between 10.30am and 11.30am.
