A LOCAL primary is to give a belated wedding gift to Prince William and Kate Middleton to recognise the school’s long-standing royal links.
The 36 pupils of Crossroads school have produced a mosaic representation of the nearby Castle of Mey.
The school received a Christmas cake from the Queen Mother during her annual stays at the castle, which she bought in 1952. Since her death the tradition has been maintained by the Prince of Wales.
The idea for the mosaic came from parent Maranda Thomson, from Harrow. She gifted the glass and ceramics and supervised three sessions when the pupils constructed the 20in by 14in creation.
Head teacher Christine Sutherland said yesterday: “Maranda came up with the idea because of our long-standing royal connection. It looks really nice and is a lovely gift.”
The mosaic has the sea and rocky foreshore in the foreground and depicts the lawn behind the castle, which is surrounded by blue sky.
The detail includes the flag atop the castle flying at full mast.
The intention is to hand over the mosaic to Prince Charles when he arrives at the start of August for his annual stay at the castle.
In the meantime, the pupils have sent off a giant wedding card they made themselves, which features the couple’s respective coat of arms.
The pupils and staff are to watch today’s wedding on the school’s newly acquired flat-screen TV before having a celebratory lunch and ceilidh.
