'Positive' buildings discussions
TALKS with Highland Council about possible changes to the regime of building inspections have been "very positive" an MSP has said.
Labour Highland member David Stewart is pushing for a change in the law to require building owners to regularly survey their properties.
He is being backed by former Inverness provost Jimmy Gray as both raised concerns after incidents across the city including masonry falling from a building in Church Street during strong winds and glass panels shattering above retail park walkways.
Mr Stewart said: "Although councils can act if buildings are deemed dangerous and go on to recoup money from owners if they carry out work, there's more that can be done to bring in more preventative measures."
Cllr Gray added: "It has been obvious to most people involved in building conservation and maintenance and also the wider public that the present legislation is completely inadequate and has created a situation whereby some of our buildings are in a dangerous condition, exposing the public to unacceptable risks. We need stronger and more effective legislation."
Mr Stewart said he is now researching current legislation to see if there are any existing measures which could help councils.
