The by-election will seek a successor for the late Alan Torrance

CANDIDATES standing in the Highland Council by-election for the Tain and Easter Ross ward have until 4pm on Tuesday May 17 to lodge their papers.

The by-election is being held on Thursday June 9 to find a successor to SNP Councillor Alan Torrance, who died recently aged 68.

Nomination papers will be available from Monday from Tain Service Point and via the home page of the Highland Council’s web site: www.highland.gov.uk.

Midnight on Tuesday May 24 is the latest time for registering to vote at the by-election. Postal votes will be issued from Thursday May 26.

Polling will take place between 7am and 10pm on June 9 at local polling stations: Duthac Centre, Tain (3 stations); Inver Village Hall; Carnegie Hall, Portmahomack; Hill of Fearn Village Hall; Mercat Centre, Munro Crescent, Milton; Nigg Village Hall and Seaboard Memorial Hall, Balintore

The count will take place at the Duthac Centre, Tain, on Friday June 10.

Councillor Torrance was one of three councillors representing Tain and East Ross. The other two representatives are Alasdair Rhind and Richard Durham, both Independent.

The electorate is 6,959.
