Highlands and Islands Labour MSP and transport campaigner, David Stewart has welcomed the planned reopening of Dalcross Railway station that is currently being developed by Network Rail as part of phase one of the Aberdeen to Inverness Rail Improvements Project.

The new station at Dalcross, Inverness Airport, will provide a great economic benefit to Inverness and the Highlands and Islands by improving transport links for the rail network across the Highlands and North East of Scotland benefiting users of the Far North and Inverness to Aberdeen lines.

In a series of written questions submitted to the Scottish Government, Transport Minister, Keith Brown MSP by Mr Stewart, it has been revealed that the new station is scheduled to be opened between 2014 and 2019. Mr Stewart has argued that it’s crucial to ensure the station is opened sooner, rather than latter.

Mr Stewart said “With Inverness Airport now offering a range of flights to across the U.K. and Europe as well as providing connecting flights to long haul destinations, it is crucial that the new rail link to the Airport is put in place as soon as possible.

“A better airport rail link is vital to ensure that Inverness flourishes as both an easily accessible tourist and business destination. Improvements in the rail network locally will give the tourism industry and business community a boost in the Highlands.”

Mr Stewart has argued the new station along with further technical improvements aimed to reduce travel times between Inverness and Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh would greatly improve the Highland economy. David Stewart will continue to put pressure on the Scottish Government in the coming months and years to ensure these vital upgrades and new stations are developed as soon as possible and congestion is reduced across the rail network.
