Highlands and Islands Labour MSP, David Stewart, has praised the work of New Start Highland following a visit to their Carsegate premises in Inverness.

With 70 staff, New Start Highland is the biggest creator of employment in the social enterprise sector in the Highlands. It has bases in Inverness, Invergordon and Fort William and retail stores in three locations in Inverness.

Mr Stewart said: “New Start Highland does excellent work in helping people maintain housing tenancies and reintegrate into independent living. Through their training schemes they also equip people with the skills required to enter or re-enter the workforce.

“The dedication of the Chief Executive, James Dunbar, the staff and the volunteers is truly inspiring. New Start Highland is a perfect example of a grass-roots community project which has grown and developed over time and now helps people from Tain to Newtonmore, from Nairn to Kinlochleven and Skye.

Mr Stewart continued: “Through their furniture service, thousands of people throughout the area have received much needed help over the years. The priority first and foremost is to pass furniture on to those in need with any surplus going to the New Start shops or being recycled.

The support aspect of New Start’s services, coupled with their high environmental objectives are second to none and it is of no surprise to me that the company, and the Chief Executive himself, are receiving award after award, the latest being the SEPA award for Excellence in Environmental Sustainability.”
