MSP calls on Aviemore resort to "show some community spirit"

Labour Highlands and Islands MSP David Stewart has called on Aviemore Highland Resort to ‘show some community spirit’.

Mr Stewart wants Macdonald Hotels and Resorts to re-think their plans to withdraw from Highland Council’s High Life scheme.

He said the decision threatens to leave hundreds of residents in the Aviemore area without easy access to affordable swimming facilities.

He has written to both Highland Council and hotel group boss Donald MacDonald encouraging them to work together for the benefit of the local community.

Mr Stewart said: "I am very concerned by the gap that will be left if the pool in Aviemore becomes unavailable for local residents to use.

"Since Aviemore doesn’t have a public swimming pool, including the Macdonald facilities in the High Life scheme was a sensible step to enable the community to access swimming facilities without the expense of building brand new facilities.

"Not everyone is able to drive long distances or pay for membership of the resort and it would be really disappointing if some of the most vulnerable groups in the area become excluded from accessing local leisure facilities."

He added: "I am a great supporter of Aviemore Highland Resort and I hope in this case that they can show some real community spirit and come to an arrangement with the council that will enable local people to access these much loved services."
