Danny Alexander: Delighted with news of the upgrade

Local MP Danny Alexander has welcomed the news that the long awaited upgrade of the Caledonian Sleeper looks set to go ahead.

The UK Government has announced £50 million towards refurbishing the cross-border service which was matched by the Scottish Government.

Commenting on reports today that Transport Scotland has announced that bidders to run the service from 2015 will be expected to offer a 'Scotland on wheels' experience Danny Alexander MP said:

"The Caledonian Sleeper is a vital service linking various part of Scotland with London whose refurbishment I was happy to promote.

"Having worked hard to deliver £50m of UK government support, it is good to hear that Transport Scotland is working on a plan to deliver our ambition of a world-leading overnight connection between the north of Scotland and London.

"Maintenance of all the trains is carried out in Inverness, and it is also important that employment is continued as part of the new franchise.

"As someone who uses that route I am looking forward to the excellent staff service being matched by facilities which will make enhance the trip and make the London sleeper an experience to savour.”
