MP Danny Alexander welcomes drop in fuel prices
A drop in local fuel prices, following the opening of the new Asda superstore in Inverness, has been welcomed by local MP Danny Alexander.
Mr Alexander, who is also Chief Secretary to the Treasury, has long campaigned for more competitive pricing, in light of the extra cost of travel incurred by life in the Highlands.
Mr Alexander commented: “This is a welcome move for the people of Inverness, who along with the rest of the Highlands have long faced a triple whammy of long distances, high costs and limited alternative transport.
“I’ve previously campaigned to ensure that Tesco treat Highland customers fairly when they were charging more for petrol at their Inverness stores over that charged to their customers in Elgin.”
He added: “From March this year consumers in the Scottish islands are already benefiting from a 5p per litre reduction in fuel duty in recognition of the higher costs they can face, and I am pleased that the arrival of the Asda store in Inverness has already led to greater competition.”
