Pedestrians using the top of Grantown’s High Street had a lucky escape today after masonry crashed to the ground.

No-one was injured in the early afternoon incident but the area outside of the former town Post Office remains cordoned off.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson told the Strathy: "We were alerted at 12.26pm today to assess a building and chimney stack on High Street in Grantown.

"Operations control mobilised one fire appliance and a specialist height appliance to the scene.

"Crews left after ensuring the area was made safe."

UPDATE SINCE PUBLICATION:

It is understood that the pieces of masonry fell from a chimney in the early hours and were spotted at 6.30am.

The gate to the alley on the street side was locked and the Post Office at the rear sealed off their end of the lane.

A source told the Strathy: “A builder was sent for and the sight was inspected and a plan made to secure the chimney.

“This was all done long before lunch time and there was no need for an emergency vehicle to be called away from its station as all precautions were in place.

“The next day scaffolding had been erected to remove all the chimneys and this was removed two days later.”
