A man who wasted police time by claiming he had been assaulted by two men in an underpass at the Eastgate Centre in Inverness was ordered to carry out 120 hours of community service.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard how police were asked to attend outside the Fatface shop at the centre at 2.30am on July 12 following reports of a disturbance.

There they met Pawel Komorowski who had three or four centimetre cuts to his forearm.

Depute fiscal Fraser Matheson said Komorowski, (33), of Eildon Guest House, High Street, Inverness told the officers he was assaulted in the underpass by two males with something sharp like a knife.

"He was taken by ambulance to Raigmore Hospital. But a review of CCTV footage showed the accused walking under the underpass and emerging on High Street and at no time were there other persons present other than the accused and an associate.

"It was totally inconsistent with what they (the police) were told."

The fiscal said Komorowski made the claim at the scene and repeated the claims to police officers back at the police station.

"When police told him of their concerns he confessed he made the whole thing up and inflicted the wounds himself."

The fiscal said medical staff at the hospital said the wounds were consistent with self harming.

In court on Thursday Komorowski represented himself and apologised through an interpreter.

Sheriff Gordon Fleetwood ordered Komorowski to carry out 120 hours of community service.
