Man jailed for attacking lodger because of his snoring
A young man who attacked a fellow lodger over his snoring was locked up after he appeared for sentence at Inverness Sheriff Court.
Sentence had been deferred on Adam McQuarrie for background reports for failure to complete community service on other offences.
But he pleaded guilty on Friday to a further charge of assaulting his victim by entering his private room at an address in Woodgrove Drive in the Highland capital on March 26 last year and repeatedly punching him on the head and body to his injury.
Depute Fiscal Kelly Mitchell said the two men stayed in the same house in adjoining rooms.
McQuarrie walked through unannounced complaining about the snoring. An argument broke out and McQuarrie punched his victim several times.
The fiscal said the man suffered a fracture to his face, a cut to his left ear and swelling to his right eye.
Defence solicitor Rory Gowans said McQuarrie had never been in custody before but he was getting close to it.
Mr Gowans said the background reports did him no favours.
"The difficulty is the number of (court) orders and I would ask for a further deferral and if he doesn’t do what he is supposed to do it will leave no option for the court."
But Sheriff Andrew Miller said he had to be guided by the social work report which was very negative.
He said: "His approach to doing unpaid work is such that I could not justify making another community payback order.
"This is a negative assessment of his suitability for such an order and he has a record of violence including four separate crimes of assault."
The Sheriff sentenced McQuarrie to five months imprisonment and a further two months from breaching a curfew and previous community payback order.
