But locals near Dulnain Bridge were concerned not enough had been done in time to avoid an accident involving a tanker by Broomhill which closed the road in both directions.

One of the local residents asked the Strathy: "Why was the A95 not cleared? It is such an important route through the area and the authorities have had so much time to prepare for this, with so many weather forecasts explaining how it was going to be."

A spokesman for BEAR Scotland responded: “BEAR teams assisted Police Scotland with safely implementing a diversion route while the lorry was safely recovered, with the A95 fully reopening at 11.45pm.

“A salt treatment was carried out on the A95 at 2pm on Wednesday afternoon, with two spreaders patrolling the route thereafter.

“Teams continue to work round the clock to keep trunk roads clear during this most recent period of snow and cold temperatures.”

The male driver had to be taken by ambulance to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness for treatment.

The crash resulted in major disruption on the whisky road between Aviemore and Grantown.

The one vehicle road traffic crash happened at 6.14pm by the curve of the road when a Daf articulated lorry jack-knifed.
