A Cairngorms beach has won a prestigious national award for the fifth year in a row.

Loch Morlich – 300m above sea level – won the Rural Beach Award at the recent

Keep Scotland Beautiful Seaside Awards 2014.

The loch has held the title since 2009 and is one of twelve Highland beaches to win an award.

Forestry Commission Scotland manages the beach and its spokesperson for the area, Jack Mackay, was delighted with the recognition.

He said: "Winning this accolade is testament to Loch Morlich being one of the best beaches in the country, which is a great boost for Aviemore and a pretty unique claim for any highland community.

"It is one of the few commission sites in Scotland where you can go sailing but it’s also surrounded by some of the best preserved areas of ancient Caledonian pine forest in the country."

Beaches considered for the awards are assessed against international standards for quality and cleanliness and are graded on water quality, litter management, information provision, risk assessment and safety procedures.
