Highland MP, Danny Alexander has criticised plans, suggested last week, that the Fire Service for the Highlands may be centralised in Aberdeen – putting the quality of service for the Highlands at risk.

If the move takes place, it will require staff at the new HQ in Aberdeen to have a keen understanding of the different specialist services needed for all communities in the Highlands and Islands.

Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey MP, Danny Alexander has expressed his deep concerns for the possible changes, saying:

"If the move goes through, it will be yet another example of the SNP Government ignoring the needs of the people in the Highlands with its 'one size fits all' approach.

"A Fire and Rescue Service which was unique to the Highlands and Islands, and close to the communities it served, may be centralised and asked to meet the needs of five million people in very disparate communities across Scotland.

"And in the meantime our fire fighters and civilian staff are waiting to find out how their futures will be affected.

"I find it unacceptable that our communities and their safety should come second to the political agenda of the SNP."
