Let there be lights at Aviemore!
Aviemore is lighting up again at its southern entrance.
Work has been taking place on replacing the 18 timber lighting columns which had to be removed after one fell over at Aviemore Railway Station’s car park in January 2019 due to wood rot.
The £20,000-a-time eye-catching structures were part of a £1.5 million village enhancement project in 2007, with a family of bespoke pieces of street furniture designed to create “a sense of arrival” at the redeveloped transport interchange.
The glue-laminated Scottish larch lamps were also installed in the centre of Aviemore and the entrance into the village.
Sadly the lamps all had to be removed after one of them unexpectedly toppled over in a busy area.
A design problem was revealed in the base, where water gathered and had nowhere to go before freezing in the winter and rotting the wood.
Utility steel lights are now being erected by Highland Council lighting department.
Local Highland Councillor Bill Lobban said: “We are trying to source some more decorative ones for around the village green.”
