The red phonebox in Laggan has been upgraded after initial fears the community had lost its only public payphone.

BT installed the phone at the end of last week after concerns were raised by Laggan Community Council.

The previous payphone had not been working because of a technical issue.

But the village’s community council feared it had been culled by the telecoms giants as part of its on-going efforts to cut the network in the Highlands.

Watchdog chairman Colin Morgan said it was a good result for the village: “A complete new coin and credit card payphone has been installed and it is the first time with a credit card option so that is very good.

“The notice indicating that the box is being considered for decommissioning has also been removed.”
