Kingussie’s Green Lane is to show the way to sustainable energy in a major national project.

The green way to save money and the planet is being promoted during Green Home Energy Week, which gets under way on Saturday (September 5).

Home Energy Scotland, funded by the Scottish Government, has organised events across the country where the public will be invited to “See for yourself how achievable energy efficiency can be.”

And on Tuesday Donnie Grant, of “Suilven” in Green Lane, (taking the ‘oil’ out of adjoining Ardbroilach Road!) will open his energy-efficient home to demonstrate the savings he has made via solar and thermal panels and a wood pellet-burning stove.

“It’s a dramatic difference from the old days of buying coal and oil,” Mr Grant told the “Strathy”.

“The house is much warmer and with much less effort - and although you lay out an initial sum to make the changes you very quickly make that money back and more.

“I thought I would help make the point by joining in with the Trust’s work this week.”

He has joined innumerable inspirational homeowners who have chosen to live more efficiently and who will all be opening their doors (efficiently, of course) to share and chat about their experiences.

An Energy Saving Trust spokesman confirmed that more than 30 Highlands and Islands homes from the Green Homes Network were taking part in a wide range of community events.

“The Green Homes Network features a broad range of low cost and innovative energy efficiency improvements, from solar powered heating to wind turbines, heat pumps to biomass boilers, wall insulation to loft insulation and everything in between.

“Our ‘Billbusters’ will allow everyone to quiz home renewables specialist Alan Grant on energy saving. Alan will also advise on how to make homes warmer and to save money.”

Donnie Grant’s home will open at 11am on Tuesday and the session will continue until 12.30. Anyone wanting to book a place can contact Giovanna Bisoni on 01463 259714 or email giovanna.bisoni@hi.homeenergyscotland.org

Places will be limited to 12.
