"We're going to be closer to the family, and our young grandchildren," she said.

Mrs Harling has had a long association with St Vincent’s Hospital having nursed in the hospital for many years and very often recounted her entertaining stories of the time she spent there.

Mary Ellen Thomson, chairperson of Friends of St Vincent’s Hospital thanked Kit for all her hard work and dedication to St Vincent’s adding: "The committee will miss her greatly, as she has played an active part in ensuring any of the hospital requests to ‘Friends’ were dealt with.

"Her secretarial duties involved the handling of many of the administrative requirements of the charity.

"Kit was overheard making a comment to a committee member regarding how she was looking forward to setting up a bird feeding station outside the conservatory window of her new house, so we decided to help her on her way.

"Due to ‘insider knowledge’ a new feeding station has already been delivered to Haddington awaiting her arrival.

"We will indeed miss Kit greatly."
