It was happy landings for star student pilot Reuben Lowe (15) of Newtonmore after his first solo flight at Cairngorm Gliding Club.

The Kingussie High School pupil, who for as long as he can remember has been a fan of flying, had been given club membership for his birthday and has enjoyed a superb training programme at its Glenfeshie base: “It was nerve-racking going up alone for the first time but I was confident, thanks to the club’s great trainers.

“I’m so grateful to the club and I recommend it to anyone, no matter their age.

“It’s a wonderful thing to do and I plan to start attending Flying School to earn my private licence.”

Club secretary Phil Hawins said: “Saturday was an almost idyllic day, with light winds and blue skies, perfect for our star student to make his first solo flight.

“He has reached this milestone after only 34 flights, having joined the club for lesson #1 around February/March. Watched by his Mum and Dad (Anne and Andy) he executed a perfect first flight, followed by a textbook landing.

The club is looking for fresh blood and Reuben is certainly leading the way!
