Next week sees the opening of an exhibition with a difference in Kingussie.

“Patina” sees three local artists reunited to celebrate art ‘burnished with wear, giving a worth determined by age and authenticity. All the evidence of life, strength, and resilience - grown beautiful with age.”

Susan Thomas, Morag Gray and Susan Robertson Scott - graduates in textiles, woven tapestry and contemporary art in the 1980s - are set to share their ideas with a range of sketchbooks available for browsing to show how to develop a theme.

“We met up again in January 2024 for a creative retreat in Kincraig,” explained Morag. “We have reunited to celebrate our individual experiences – a melting pot of travelling and working abroad, teaching, families and home making.

“Inspired by our snowy winter stay, the idea grew to stage an event in Kingussie to share the fun we found working alongside each other.”

The Iona Gallery is hosting an open studio event from next Wednesday (4) until Tuesday June 10, from 10- 4pm.

“Visitors are welcome to pop in to see three artists at play!”

Throughout the week there will be opportunities for visitors to “join in and have a go themselves.”

Susan Robertson Scott will be experimenting with mixed media techniques and Morag Gray will be stitching with upcycled textiles “Bringing new life to an old favourite!”

Susan Thomas will surprise with “something totally off the wall, or more likely the door!”

On Saturday June 7 from 11am–3pm the gallery will see a mixed media workshop called “Layer up a Landscape Collage” to give new ideas and inspiration.

Create a striking range of printed and textured papers and materials to create your own landscapes. Wear old clothes and come along and have some fun!

On Sunday, June 8, from 11-3pm for those interested in textiles, there will be a sewing workshop titled “Create a Funky Textured panel” for a cushion cover or shoulder bag, with a simple technique using a selection of upcycled fabrics based on a geometric Moroccan tile pattern: “Please bring a sewing machine with machine threads, small sharp scissors and pins. Add some creative sizzle to your Summer with hot colours!”

Each workshop costs £35.00 with all materials provided, along with coffee and cake.

To book, email Roy Alexander at the Iona Gallery at roya@a9partnership.co.uk

There is an open invitation to anyone interested to meet the artists for coffee and cake from 10.30 on Thursday 5.
