A bridge crossing the Spey on the outskirts of Kingussie is to soon be closed for a month for much-needed improvement works to be carried out.

Highland Council is reminding drivers that Ruthven Bridge, which crosses the river on the B970 road between Kingussie and Ruthven Barracks, will be temporarily closed to all vehicles starting from next Tuesday.

The closure, which will affect all vehicles, is necessary to allow for essential carriageway and waterproofing work to be undertaken.

From Tuesday (2 May) drivers should follow the diversion signs that will take traffic via Aviemore.

Motorists may also choose to use the old bridge by Kincraig but that is subject to weight restrictions because of the condition of the crossing.

A council spokesperson said: "Ruthven Bridge will remain closed to all traffic until works on site are completed. This is scheduled to be by Tuesday 30 May.

"The council has worked with the contractor to ensure pedestrians, cyclists, and dismounted equestrians can pass through the site while the road is closed.

"This public access across the bridge will be maintained during evenings and weekends.

"Access on weekdays may vary and specific arrangements in place on any given date will be communicated by signage at the site."

There have been on-going complaints over the condition of Ruthven Bridge which is pitted with large potholes and patching has not worked most of the time.
