Kingussie public toilets locked up yet again after being targeted by vandals
The mindless war against the strath’s public conveniences goes on - but for how long?
Following the latest attack at Kingussie’s Ardvonie facilities there was a despairing quality to the briefing note sent from the Highland Council to its local members on Monday.
“Unfortunately due to ongoing vandalism we have had to close the Kingussie PC with immediate effect,” stated Debbie Sutton, the amenties manager for the south area.
“The facility had all the toilet rollholders broken and toilet paper strewn everywhere..
“As a service we are so disappointed with the way this facility has been treated.
“ As has occurred at other sites where vandalism is an ongoing issue, we have instructed an immediate closure.
“We will not be reopening these facilities for at least one month to see if things settle down.”
With an ominous final comment, the official lines was: “We cannot carry on repairing them until we are satisfied that the daily threat of vandalism is reduced.”
A cleaning company had reported the damage to the council, pointing out that the damage had been done in the ladies section of the Kingussie public conveniences, enclosing pictures of the vandalism.
“The ladies has been trashed, with toilet rolls holders broken and toilet roll everywhere.”
Kingussie has seen regular vandalism bouts in recent years and latterly there have been similar incidents at Grantown and Carrbridge.
The latest attack particularly aggrieved local Highland councillor Bill Lobban.
He has spoken out before about the senseless damage being done by some in both Badenoch and Strathspey.
Councillor Lobban said it remains to be seen how much longer the authorities can go on spending money on repairs only for them to be vandalised yet again.
The convener of Highland Council told the Strathy: “This is yet another disgraceful example of a total lack of respect for our community.
“Let’s be clear - this is not limited to Kingussie although it has probably seen the worst example to date.
“Facilities from all over Badenoch and Strathspey have been targeted including those directly owned by the community themselves.
