Kingussie livestock market to feature tonight on BBC’s Gaelic TV channel
Fans of Kingussie’s historic - but long disused - sheep and cattle market should tune into BBC Alba tonight at 8pm.
Local crofter Ruairidh Ormiston tells us that the Gaelic TV channel will be featuring the market both in its heyday and considering what might be its future.
Said Mr Ormiston, who runs Highland Horse Fun and participated in the filming at the former market, sent us these historic shots of the place in action.
“I got these from Christine, the daughter of Chris Murphy one of the last auctioneers from ANM marts - he lived in Keith and only died this winter.
“He always said his favourite sales were Kingussie - lots of familiar faces here
“I had come straight from filming with BBC Alba TV a piece about the history and heritage of the old Livestock Mart next to Kingussie Railway Station which will hopefully in the future be repurposed for community benefit.”
“I think I can safely say this will be the last time you will see cattle in the ring at Kingussie - we will be covering the history and heritage of the mart and the local farmers club that ran it and who it was linked to the railway, because that was how livestock was moved back in the day.
“You may also see a wee bit on cattle droving tonight.”
