Big-hearted artistry connects Badenoch and Strathspey patients
Patients at St Vincent’s Hospital in Kingussie are being connected to their families and loved ones despite the continuing Covid-19 lockdown.
Delighted hospital administrator Vicki Gosling was pictured on Monday after receiving the precious gift of an iPad.
The Apple device will ease the social isolation for some residents who have not been allowed visits now for over eight weeks, in accordance with the government’s coronavirus guidance.
Kincraig-based artist Ann Vastano is selling her latest series of pen and ink works with the aim of donating 50 per cent of the income to buy iPads to make life more bearable for patients in local hospitals and care homes.
“It suits me as well, to make the gesture,” Mrs Vastano explained, “as while doing something really useful for others it also ensures that I keep honing my skills as an artist.
"It’s a win-win.”
She was given the idea by local Highland Councillor Muriel Cockburn who was delighted to see the painter’s skills put to such great social use at a very difficult time.
Also over the moon were the Friends of St Vincent’s, on whose behalf Eppy Mackay told the Strathy: “We were so delighted to hand over the newly purchased iPad on Anne’s behalf after her generous donation.
“It will allow patients to hold and enjoy virtual visiting with their families and friends, which is a welcome addition to the wonderful care already provided by the hospital staff.”
Ann said: “This week I’m running a series of local lochs. So far together we have raised more than £1000 with iPads also bought for Ian Charles Hospital and Grant House in Grantown.
“I’m going to carry pledging on as long as the need is there. These devices will also have a useful legacy.
“Thanks to local Highland councillor Muriel for suggesting the idea. I know it will do a lot of good.”
