Kingussie have retained the cottages..com Mactavish Cup.

Captain Calum Grant hoisted the silverware high after a great tussle today with Fort William at The Eilan in, of all places, Newtonmore.

Before the match Grant had told the Strathy that the strategy was straightforward:

“We’ll follow our usual routine for a game at the Eilan.

“It’s something we’re used enough to, which is a wee bit of an advantage.”

The strategy was effective today and it was just as well, after a blast from the Fort.

The visitors to Badenoch took first blood with a captain’s opener from Victor Smith after just seven minutes.

But it simply stung the defending champions into action with an immediate equaliser from Liam Borthwhick, within the minute.

The battle was drawn and an even-handed tussle produced no breakthrough in the rest of the half - and a good deal of the second.

Savio Genini, though, had other ideas and broke the deadlock on the 62nd minute.

The Kings held off a counter attack from Smith’s Mowi National Division side and Genini slotted the winner home seven minutes later.

We’ll have a full report and reaction in this week’s Strathy.
