Police have named the man whose body was recovered from a four by four that plunged into the Caledonian canal last week.

He is 43 year old Fraser Robertson from the Inverness area.

It follows a call to the police by a member of the public, who saw the red four by four go into the water at Muirtown Locks last Wednesday, around 11.27am.

Specialist divers from Grampian Police eventually recovered Mr Robertson who was found still inside the vehicle.

Emergency services involved in the initial response included Northern Constabulary, Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue Service, Scottish Ambulance Service, RNLI, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and British Waterways.

Fire fighters earlier attempted to use an underwater camera on a long pole in an attempt to see anything under the water.

However, nothing could be seen due to the depth and darkness of the water.

Staff from nearby companies and local residents were shocked at what had happened.

Staff at City Taxis, whose office overlooks the canal, became aware of the incident when police arrived at the scene.

Manager Kevin Clark said footage on a CCTV camera at the premises shows a vehicle apparently veering towards the canal between the fence and the railings. "It looks a bit like a jeep," Mr Clark said.

A spokesman for Northern Constabulary said a member of the public had reported the incident. It is understood that the water is about 16ft deep where the search took place.
