A statement for Inverness Airport said: “For stays of 48 hours or less, we recommend using our short stay car parks particularly if you are not booking your parking in advance, as this will be the most cost effective option.

“Our short stay car parks are located near to the terminal building. Our useful car park map can help point you in the right direction.

“Our long stay car park is located beyond the short stay zones. We recommend this option for those who are parking for over 48 hours, although cheaper rates may be available within the short stay car park if booking parking in advance.

“We recommend that long stay parking is booked before you arrive at the airport. Bookings can be made up to 12 months in advance of your travels. Visit our online booking service for more information.”

However, the changes to the new system have received backlash online.

Ross Henderson-McKillop said: “Appalling decision by HIAL. You are the only airport serving a widely spread predominantly rural community, most of whom are arriving by car, there is never a problem with the existing drop off so no reason to reduce use other than profit gouging.”

Riam Lynn added: “The signs are not clear, even when looking, the woman refused to let us out without paying £3.80, as was the same for the van next to us!

“Inside the airport I was told by the information desk, she looked this morning and it's very clear, the red zone! Well it might be clear because you know where the car park is, but it's absolutely not clear when you arrive in your car.”
