"I'm no singer" says Highland MP Danny

Local Lib Dem MP Danny Alexander has declined a challenge put to him by local Yes campaigners to express his passion for the union through the medium of song.

Carrbridge musician Gilly has had well over 2,000 hits on YouTube for his pro-independence song, “Let Alba Shine”, and its supporters have called on Mr Alexander to perform his own rival single.

But the MP has not risen to the bait, telling the “Strathy” in no uncertain terms that musicianship was not his strong suit.

He said: “There are many things that I will do, I will go to almost any lengths to see the UK kept together because I think it’s so important, but if you’d heard my singing voice…

“One of the things that could damage our economy most is separating Scotland from the rest of the UK. It would set our recovery back by a generation and cost jobs locally.

“I don’t want to see that happen, but I think hearing me singing might be the one thing that could set back the ‘No’ campaign in the Highlands.”

Mr Alexander, also the chief secretary to the treasury, was speaking at a visit to BSW Timber Group’s sawmill near Boat of Garten as the government lauded the UK’s latest GDP figures showing the economy had returned to “pre-crisis” levels.
