Ice to blame for last night's lorry pile-up on the A9 south of Dalwhinnie

Photographs and witness comments are emerging now that traffic is moving as normal on the A9 to and from Badenoch.

For hours this morning motorists were advised to avoid the A9 between House of Bruar and Dalwhinnie after seven lorries were involved in a pile up after jack-knifing on the icy road surface.

Danny Murison, of Blair Atholl, who captured this shot later of a long row of banked lorries waiting clearance to proceed south while the road was being cleared by the emergency services, told the Strathy:

"I saw the mess on the bankings both sides of southbound carriageway on way home.

"Mustv’e been scary for drivers, trying to slow to stop on ice with the load behind them pushing them on."

The road was declared fully open at 11.20 this morning.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police were made aware of a lorry having jack-knifed on the A9 southbound near Dalnaspidal around 12.15am.

“Reports were received of a further five lorries having jack-knifed in the area and the road was closed between House of Bruar and Dalwhinnie.
