Two more families have moved into affordable homes in an innovative project in Badenoch and Strathspey

The scheme devised less than 18 months ago is now providing long-term affordable rental homes to a total of six families with more three bedroom homes currently under development in Dulnain Bridge and set to be available later this year.

The partnership between the Cairngorms Business Partnership, HHA and Highland Council gives priority access to employees of local businesses who are members of the recently established Cairngorms Housing Partnership in return for the CHP guaranteeing rents in certain circumstances.

New tenant Jonathan Ames said: “Since moving to the area to establish and run the falconry experience at Rothiemurchus we have really struggled, like many, to find anywhere for my family to live and call home and have been living in a caravan since our arrival last April.

“This new home means the world to my family and I and means that we can now truly think of the Cairngorms as our new home.”

James Grant, of Rothiemurchus, said the estate’s biggest challenge as an employer is to find homes for people who want to come and work for them and retaining staff because they cannot find a home.

He said: “We were delighted to take part and invest in this innovative scheme for the benefit of the local economy.

“To see Jonathan be successful in his application for one of the Kincraig homes is an added bonus that will enable us to continue to invest in our business and share Rothiemurchus with locals and visitors alike”

HHA is developing the homes, in partnership with the council and Scottish Government, for mid market rent – levels are typically lower than private rent levels and higher than social rents.

CBP chief Mark Tate is keen to expand the scheme and said: “Providing six homes for local families has made a difference and we are really proud of the impact this initiative is having.

“We know, though, that it is a drop in the ocean and we would be keen to hear from any property owners who might want to work with us to increase the supply of homes accessible to local employees.”
