Strathspey fire station sees its first female Watch Commander
A Strathspey firefighter has made local history by climbing the ladder all the way to Watch Commander.
Megan Murray (28) is the first-ever female Watch Commander at Carrbridge Community Fire Station.
Her colleagues had praised her work ethic: “She has worked incredibly hard throughout her career, demonstrating excellent leadership skills and dedication to get to this point, she really is an inspiration.”
She explained: "It was always a dream to become a firefighter, to be able to do it alongside my primary employment at the village’s Spar shop was a bonus!
“I enjoy every aspect of the job from the training days to the call outs at all hours but most importantly helping people.
“I feel honoured to have been given the opportunity to be the Watch Commander at Carrbridge. I can't wait to help the unit grow and make a difference. Hopefully I will encourage more females in the village to join".
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service announced: “We’re passionate about encouraging more women to consider a career in firefighting and Megan’s proof that you don’t have to give up your other commitments to make it happen.
“So, if you know a mum, daughter, niece, sister or friend who’s ever thought about becoming a firefighter, tell them about Megan. Show them what’s possible.
“Reach out to your local station via their Facebook page to discover how you could be an on-call firefighter and be part of something extraordinary.”
