Highlands war hero to be laid to rest in Newtonmore
Sir Tommy Macpherson - one of Britain’s most daring soldiers who outfoxed the enemy whilst carrying out Winston Churchill’s orders to set occupied Europe ablaze - is being laid to rest tomorrow (Friday) in his native Newtonmore.
The World War II hero, who had risked life and limb on countless occasions during the conflict, died in his sleep at his home, Speyville, last Thursday aged 94.
He had been the most decorated living soldier of the British Army with three Military Crosses, three Croix de Guerre, a Legion d’honneur and a papal knighthood to his name.
Most famously - but just one of his many feats of wartime heroism - the legendary commando single-handedly tricked 23,000 German soldiers into surrendering.
Sir Tommy's final journey will be in his beloved Badenoch. His funeral service will take place at the village’s St Bride’s at 11am and he will be buried at Biallid Beag.
