A Highlands man returned from a holiday in the Caribbean to find his computers had been seized by police.

Investigations found over 3,383 still images and 98 videos of indecent images of children on the computers belonging to Colin Grant.

The 54 year-old accused, of Wellside Gardens, Balloch, admitted downloading the images between January and September 2012.

Sheriff Margaret Neilson heard from depute fiscal Roderick Urquhart that police arrived at Grant’s home on September 7 with a warrant after information had been received from a national investigation team tackling child pornography.

A family member told police Grant and his wife were on holiday in the Caribbean.

They removed three computers and an external hard drive and found the images and videos that had been downloaded.

The fiscal said Grant attended at Inverness' Burnett Road Police Station on September 14 on his return from holiday and assured officers there would be no illegal or offensive material to be found.

Mr Urquhart told the court: "However he returned three days later in an agitated state and said he wanted to make a statement."

He said Grant declined legal advice and gave a statement saying he had previously acquired software for films but it became apparent to him as well as the files he was looking for, pornography was also available.

"He had viewed and deleted images of adolescent boys and girls. His use had greatly increased when he purchased a new computer.

"He said he was not a paedophile and had no intention of approaching children."

Mr Urquhart said analysis of the computers confirmed there were 3843 still and 98 videos.

Sheriff Neilson deferred sentence until January 13 for background reports.

He was placed on the Sex Offenders Register.
