Highland MSP told speed limit on the A9 will not be cut
Highlands MSP Rob Gibson has welcomed an assurance that the speed limit on the A9 will remain unaffected following the introduction of average speed cameras.
Mr Gibson raised the issue with Scottish Transport Minster Keith Brown during a debate on transport in the Scottish Parliament.
The SNP Caithness, Sutherland, and Ross member said that there were concerns that the speed limits would be lowered following the installation of average speed cameras.
Mr Brown responded by stating that those concerns were unfounded and that the average speed cameras - due to be introduced along the length of the road by next summer - would not come with a cut in speed limits.
Mr Gibson also said he would continue to press the Minister to restrict overtaking from heavy goods vehicles on the overtaking sections of the A9.
He said: "I wrote to the Minister last month regarding the A9. One point I raised was what powers the Government had to make provision to restrict overtaking by heavy goods vehicles on the A9.
"In the response they said that they did. I will continue to press the Minister for action so that overtaking lanes can be freed up for smaller vehicles."
During the debate, the Minister stated: "One misconception that appears to exist is that the average-speed cameras will involve a reduction in speed limits. The average-speed cameras will come in in the next year, and the final procurement and timescale for that will be published shortly."
