Secure bike storage scheme launched in Highlands

Cycle tourism is growing in Scotland with mountain bike tourism worth over £90m a year to the Scottish economy and expected to grow by 30 per cent by 2025.

An essential ingredient to a fantastic cycling holiday is the standard of accommodation which is offered to cyclists.

Developing Mountain Biking in Scotland, with funding support in the Highland region through Highlands and Island Enterprise and the Inverness City-Region Deal, have launched an offer which could help Scottish accommodation providers better meet the needs of this growing market.

Funding of up to £500 is available to accommodation providers, with a maximum of half the overall project costs, including installations charges, to improve the mountain bike visitor experience.

Graeme McLean, head of Developing Mountain Biking in Scotland said: “We are eager to support accommodation providers across the Highlands be better prepared to cater for the growing number of mountain bikers wishing to holiday here.

"We are launching this scheme to help accommodation businesses provide secure bike storage, which we know is a key ingredient in providing a better visitor journey for mountain bikers.

"Accommodation providers who cater better for cyclists and mountain bikers can benefit from attracting a whole new set of customers who are willing to pay for a quality service, so we would encourage them to get involved, watch our short film and complete the application form. “

Anyone interested should read the full guidance notes and download the application form here.

Successful applicants will be required to purchase equipment, complete installation works and submit claim by March 1 at the latest.

The funding assistance will then be reimbursed.
