Highland Council to assess danger building in Grantown
Highland Council is to inspect a building in Grantown from which masonry fell to check if it is safe to reopen the public footpath in the vicinity.
Barricades have been put up by Highland Council by the Scottish Hydro shop on the town's High Street after the heavy stonework came crashing to the ground recently from the roof of the three-story building.
However, there are concerns that pedestrians - and in particular school pupils - are being forced into the road on that side of the street as a result.
Scottish Hydro shop manager Louise Laing said she had seen several children nearly get hit by an HGV on the High Street earlier this week.
Loiuse had initially cordoned off the area at risk to her own safety after spotting the danger a short time before the two large chunks of masonry fell to the ground 11 days ago.
A large plastic banner advertising the Grantown Show belonging to the Cairngorms National Park Authority and put up by Highland Council caused the stones to come loose in the high winds.
A Highland Council spokesperson said today (Thursday): “The area has been cordoned off for public safety.
"The council will be inspecting the building and cordoned barrier area later today or early tomorrow and following this inspection community services will alter the barriers to provide a pedestrian route if this is considered appropriate.”
