Highland Council confirms return of Dalfaber Drive junction roadworks in Aviemore
Roadworks which caused chaos in Aviemore last summer are due to resume tomorrow, it has now been confirmed.
The roadworks at the junction of Grampian Road and Dalfaber Drive had been due to return last September but were then postponed.
There was anger and frustration last summer caused by the over-running of the redesign work which had initially been due for completion within 10 weeks.
The local authority eventually removed the roadworks in mid-July after coming under increasing pressure, with tailbacks for northbound traffic stretching the length of the village and delays of a half-hour at peak times.
Four sets of temporary traffic lights had been in place and malfunctioned at times adding to the problems.
A Highland Council spokeswoman told the Strathy: "The contractor could have re-commenced on site immediately after the completion of the level crossing works on Dalfaber Drive, but due to the weather forecast including snow and low temperatures, it was anticipated that they wouldn’t be able to complete the works before Christmas.
"In particular, they wouldn’t have been able to complete the surfacing works in the forecast temperatures.
"Re-commencing prior to Christmas therefore would have meant leaving the traffic management in place over the holiday period.
"In order to minimise disruption, it was therefore decided to re-start after the holiday period.
"Works are re-commencing tomorrow in order to allow people to return to work and school on the first day back today, without the traffic management being in place."
Adding to the confusion are signs in place at the junction stating that work starts for four weeks from “January 10, 2022”.
