High literature sought in Cairngorms
The height of creativity is being sought a new writing competition in the strath.
Scribes with a taste for the high life are courted by the Mountaineering Council of Scotland in its long-running literary contest.
It was announced earlier this year and the August 31deadline is looming.
The MCofS Mountain Writing Competition 2014 (formerly the Mountain Article Competition) seeks out the best in mountain writing, whether fact or fiction, prose or poetry.
Entries should have some connection with mountains and mountaineering, rock or ice climbing, walking or ski-mountaineering, and winners will receive a cash prize and the chance to see their entries in print in the Scottish Mountaineer, the quarterly MCofS magazine which goes out to its more than 12,000 members.
The first placed winners in prose and poetry categories will also receive a free weekend pass (worth about £100) to the 2015 Edinburgh Mountain Film Festival.
Winning entries are also published on the MCofS website.
Run since 1987, the competition is open to members and non-members alike and last year attracted almost 70 entries from all over the UK.
Prose entries should be a maximum of 2,000 words long.
Poetry entries can be long or short. The competition is open to anyone resident in the UK, whether members of the MCofS or not.
Entries should be sent to the MWC Coordinator, Mike Merchant, preferably by email to article@mcofs.org.uk or by hard copy to MCofS, ‘MWC2014’, The Old Granary, West Mill Street, Perth PH1 5QP.
Full details of the competition are available on the website at http://www.mcofs.org.uk/article-photo-comp-entry.asp
