Highland Line travellers held up at Kingussie by 'heavy rains'

Rail passengers through the strath faced delays this afternoon, with some left waiting at Kingussie as checks were reportedly made on the line to Inverness.

"We're not sure exactly what the delay is," said one traveller on the busy Badenoch platform early in the afternoon, "but there's some talk of the company wanting to check flooding somewhere further on up the line.

"We're just waiting to hear."

ScotRail information boards referred to speed limitations on the 13.33 from Edinburgh to Inverness train after Perth due to heavy rain but there was nothing more specific.

A note on the 15.08 Glasgow Queen Street train to Inverness journey told passengers of a time change:

"This is due to a speed restriction because of heavy rain.

"Train will be formed of two coaches instead of four."

Travellers waiting at Kingussie were back on their way after a break of less than an hour.

A spokesman for Network Rail has since told the Strathy: "There have been delays on the Highland Mainline due to flooding issues between Kingussie and Kincraig.

"This led to a couple of closures of the line while inspections were carried out.

"Problems first occurred at around 10:00 and were resolved by 12:00, before a reoccurrence of flooding at around 1300 which was resolved by 14:30.

"Around five trains were delayed, or had part of their journey cancelled as a result."
