Highland heart patients offered new service
A new service is being offered to help patients with chronic heart failure in the strath.
And an NHS Highland heart expert is lending his support behind the befriending scheme, aimed at improving the quality of life for people living with the condition.
Consultant Cardiologist Professor Steve Leslie believes the project, run by Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland, plays a crucial role in improving the lives of patients.
He said: “Chronic heart failure (CHF) is a long term condition which can be associated with significant physical disability, anxiety, depression and reduced quality of life.
“Befriending involves a professional relationship between a volunteer and patient providing a reliable relationship for people living with chronic heart failure.
“I think this is an exciting opportunity for patients with CHF and compliments the treatment they are currently receiving from the NHS.”
Evidence suggests that befriending often provides people with a new direction in life and opens up a range of activities leading to increased self-esteem and self confidence.
Anna Metzler-Murray, Heart Failure Support Service Co-ordinator for Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland, says the interest in the befriending scheme has been high.
She said: “We have had almost 20 people who have signed up for the programme to help people with CHF.
“They come from a number of backgrounds; retired people, jobseekers looking for a good reference on their C.V and students looking to complement their health care course, but all of them are caring and friendly individuals.
“What we are missing is referrals. We have a team of people trained to help, but without the patients, they can’t do anything.
“The only criterion for people to be referred to the scheme is that they have chronic heart failure. I would urge any GPs, social workers, carers or friends and family in the Highlands to refer patients with chronic heart failure onto the programme as it can significantly improve their quality of life.”
