Grantown’s volunteer army is in need of more foot soldiers

The Strathspey capital boasts a proud heritage in top-notch public events like Hogmanay in The Square, festive lights, the Grantown Show, Motormania, Thunder in the Glen, the Fiddler of Strathspey and mega truck festivals, which all thrive thanks to the friendly force of local volunteers.

Some have been organising events for 25 years but, of course, time takes its toll eventually, and some now want to ease off, eyeing retirement on the horizon.

The Grantown Initiative, which oversees the events, is now looking for a new regiment which will see the shows march on for another quarter of a century.

First call is for the watering team looking after the hanging baskets and planters in the town from June through until October.

The community council, together with other volunteer organisations in Grantown, has created a major project to spruce up the place after the many months of neglect during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Some tasks will be undertaken by Highland Council including maintenance of the roads and pavements and other duties when financial resources allow, but most will require volunteers.

Until coronavirus restrictions are lifted further, it is not possible for large groups to work together outside, which will be necessary to complete some of the tasks.

Grantown Community Council chairwoman Linda Coe said: “Once we are able to work in groups, we will advertise days for volunteers to undertake various tasks such as litter collection, painting, pavement clearing on the outskirts of Grantown.

“Pending easing of restrictions, there are some small tasks residents can undertake outside their own properties. We want to encourage people to walk around Grantown rather than drive, but that needs accessible pavements for pedestrians, wheelchairs, pushchairs and so on.

“We’re asking everyone to clear the pavement of vegetation outside their home or business. Some already do, for which we are extremely grateful – we would just like more to join in.

“If you have a neighbour who is less able than you to undertake these tasks, perhaps you could do these for them?

“Be part of showing visitors that Grantown residents care, and help to maintain our town as a premier tourist destination.”

Anyone who would like to get involved can email Linda Coe at info@grantownonline.com and volunteers to water the floral display should contact John Halliday directly by email at gosvcc@gmail.com
