Grantown to become Greentown for part of the weekend

HES advisors have been touring the region and will be stopping off at this weekend's Greentown show organised by Sustainable Strathspey.

Sustainable Strathspey is raring to go with the third Greentown Show taking place this Saturday.

The event is being held in The Square in Grantown from at 11am to 3pm.

The show will be a chance to network, share ideas and inspiration, and get hold of good quality information on what is going on locally in the move to a greener future.

Sustainable Strathspey spokesman Dr Peter Grant said: "This year energy saving is more important than ever for all of us, and so once again advice on how to make our homes more energy-efficient will be at the core of the event.

"Leading local accredited providers of green home improvements will be at the event and there will also be totally independent advice on funding and installation from Home Energy Scotland (HES).

"Such was the demand for advice from HES at last year’s show that four of their advisers will be with us this year."

Waste and how to deal with it – by avoidance, reduction, re-use, or recycling – is always a big part of Greentown, and this year will be no different.

Dr Grant said: "We will be welcoming for the first time Ritchies, our local heroes of recycling, and Speyshed, who are going to show us what we can do with waste wood.

"Love them or loathe them, turbines are here to stay and are a vital part of our energy mix, and we are delighted to have Vattenfall, the company behind the proposed Ourack windfarm, present this year to answer questions."

The key theme for this year will be active travel.

Dr Grant said: "We will have some great organisations here to show how people of all abilities can get out and about in and around Grantown, and can get the simple skills needed to keep their machines on the road."

He continued: "A new feature this year will be our ‘Tent Talks’ where you can learn how to mend a puncture, make a birdbox, save water at home, put the right things in your blue bin, insulate your home and garden using permaculture principles.

"At the Sustainable Strathspey stall visitors can see a real beehive at work, and be introduced to the Highlands and Islands Climate Action Hub, to find out more about the events that will be happening across the north in the Climate Action Festival through the following week.

"Last year we were well supported by our local Highland Region councillors, and we have invited them to the show again this year, so that you can have a chance to chat to them on any local issues."
