Strathspey salmon dish could leap to the top for major honour
The success story of a once-threatened Strathspey smokehouse goes on.
Speyside Smokehouse Salmon Jerky has been shortlisted for a Fresh Discovery Award at this year’s Specialty and Fine food Fair.
Made in the Spey Valley Smokehouse, Grantown, the jerky uses Scottish Atlantic farmed salmon and follows traditional jerky making methods.
The winner will be announced on Monday (September 2) at the event in London.
A delighted James Newitt, New World Foods (Europe) CEO, said: "With demand for meat snacks still growing, having salmon available in our jerky range gives consumers a choice for high protein snacking. "This jerky offers consumers the perfect alternative to red meat, that is a lighter, gluten-free substitute to other dried meat snacks without compromising on flavour.
“We’re really excited to be bringing Speyside Smokehouse Salmon Jerky to Speciality and Fine Food Fair for their 20th anniversary event – and delighted that the product has been recognised as a finalist in the Fresh Discovery Award.”
It was in 2015 that the future of the smokehouse was questioned when owners Young’s Seafood lost a £100million salmon contract with supermarket giant Sainsburys.
Since moving into premises the following year to produce salmon jerky, New World Foods has gone from strength strength.
