Grantown school pipers set for Highland Military Tattoo
Two youngsters will be piping up for Grantown Grammar School when they take centre stage with their bandmates at one of the North’s biggest events later this week.
Carrbridge bagpipers Ailsa Hepburn and Jack Doherty will be playing at the Highland Military Tattoo which will take place at Fort George near Inverness from Friday (September 5) to the following Sunday.
Ailsa, (16), and Jack, (14), are members of the City of Inverness Youth Pipe Band which will be joining other local and military pipe bands to play at the Tattoo.
The pair are pupils at Grantown Grammar School where they are being taught to play the pipes by Highland Council piping tutor Lewis Barclay. He said: "Playing at the Tattoo with world class adult pipe bands and military brass bands will be a fantastic experience for Ailsa, Jack and the other young people in the band.
"They are delighted to have been chosen to take part and are really looking forward to the challenge."
Bringing together a mix of local, military and international acts, the Tattoo promises to be a stunning spectacle.
Kicking off with a flypast, it will showcase for visitors and local people the best of traditional and contemporary Highland culture from fiddlers to pipe bands, Highland dancers to Gaelic singers.
One of the highlights will be a visit from the Hellcats ensemble, from the West Point Academy in the USA. The oldest military band in the US, the Hellcats are making their first ever visit to the UK in their 220-year history.
The Highland Military Tattoo forms part of Highland Homecoming 2014.
All profits will be donated to Armed Forces charities.
